FAQs

How is monthly take-home calculated?

Take-home = CTC − Employee EPF − Employer NPS contribution (if opted) − Income Tax (after standard deduction & exemptions). What lands in your bank account each month is this divided by 12.

What is the optimal Basic % in salary structure?

40% basic is industry standard. Some companies offer 50% which increases HRA exemption potential and EPF contribution but also increases income tax base. Higher basic = higher EPF (good) but also higher tax in new regime.

Should I opt for employer NPS contribution?

Yes, especially in old regime. Up to 14% (govt) or 10% (private) of basic deductible u/s 80CCD(2). In new regime, only 14% available. Employer NPS reduces taxable income directly with no upper cap.

Does food coupon save tax?

Yes — up to ₹50/meal × 22 days = ₹1,100/month is tax-free under FBP (flexi benefits). Old regime only. Most employers cap at ₹2,200/month (lunch + dinner). Modern alternatives: Sodexo, Zeta, Pluxee.

LTA — what counts?

Leave Travel Allowance: travel expenses for self + family within India. Tax-exempt twice in a 4-year block (current: 2022-25). Old regime only. Need actual travel + tickets to claim.
