PPF is one of the rare instruments with Exempt-Exempt-Exempt status: deposits qualify for ₹1.5L deduction under 80C, the interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is also tax-free. There are very few products in India with this triple-tax-free structure.
Key rules
- • Min ₹500/year, max ₹1.5 lakh/year deposit
- • 15-year lock-in (extendable in 5-year blocks)
- • Partial withdrawal allowed from year 7
- • Loan against PPF allowed in years 3–6
- • Rate notified quarterly by Government — currently 7.1% (Apr–Jun 2026)
PPF vs FD vs ELSS
PPF beats FD on post-tax returns (FD interest is taxable, PPF is not). ELSS beats PPF on long-run returns but carries equity risk. Most investors should hold all three for different time horizons.
