Gold holds near record high above ₹1.49 lakh/10g on MCX — what it means for your money

MCX gold is trading above ₹1.49 lakh per 10 grams, close to its all-time high, as global bullion extends a rally driven by safe-haven demand and Fed rate-cut bets. Here's how it affects gold loan borrowers, jewellery buyers and paper-gold investors.

Gold prices in India are holding just below their all-time peak. On August 7, 2026, MCX gold futures traded above ₹1.49 lakh per 10 grams, with retail 24K rates around ₹14,989/gram, 22K around ₹13,740/gram, and 18K around ₹11,242/gram (indicative, before GST and making charges — actual prices vary by city and jeweller). Globally, Comex gold touched roughly $4,343/oz the same day, up over 2% in a single session.

Why gold is rallying

The move is being driven by a mix of a weaker US jobs report fuelling bets on US Federal Reserve rate cuts, a softer dollar index, and persistent safe-haven demand tied to unresolved geopolitical tension. Gold has been one of 2026’s best-performing assets, repeatedly setting fresh highs through the year.

What this means if you’re a borrower

If you’ve pledged jewellery for a gold loan, rising prices raise the market value of your collateral. Under RBI’s harmonised gold-loan directions (effective April 2026), loans up to ₹2.5 lakh can now get up to 85% LTV — so existing borrowers may have room to top up, though it’s worth borrowing only what you actually need. See our explainer on the RBI gold loan rules for the full framework.

What this means if you’re buying

Fresh jewellery purchases are now expensive relative to earlier in the year — avoid lump-sum buying purely because of festive-season pressure. Since the government stopped issuing new Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) tranches in 2024, gold ETFs and gold mutual fund SIPs remain the main paper-gold routes for cost-averaging into the metal rather than timing a single large purchase. Treat gold as a portfolio hedge (commonly 5-10% of holdings), not a timing bet.
